A new term: Ambient ROI

No one asks about the ROI of e-mail and the phone. They used to ask when these technologies were rolled out in the enterprise, but no one asks now. Why not? Because of detailed ROI studies? No, but because asking the question just seemed silly pretty quickly. ROI needs to be defined and redefined in this new world.

It’s far better to ask, ‘Is this project meeting a need?’ — which isn’t the same as the direct ROI of dollars and cents from each blog post. That’s why e-mail and the phone are still around. They provide ambient ROI, or ROI that’s all around, but hard to reduce to dollars and cents.

What do you think?
